Founded in 1958, the High Plains Herbarium is the second largest herbarium in Nebraska and the primary repository of plants from the Nebraska panhandle with a significant representation of the plants of southeastern Wyoming, southwestern South Dakota, as well as all of Nebraska and Kansas.

We have recently completed a multi-year digitalization project, and all our accessioned vascular plant holdings can be searched online via currently have the largest digital footprint of any herbarium in the state with over 2/3 of our vascular plant data accessible via the Consortium of Great Plains Herbaria portal (http://ngpherbaria.org/portal/index.php), and our accessioned bryophyte data searchable at Consortium of Bryophyte Herbaria portal (http://bryophyteportal.org/portal/index.php).

The vascular plant, bryophyte and lichen herbaria are accessible in Room 001 located on the lowest level of the newly renovated Math & Science building, whereas the bulk of our library, the Morgan and Barr collections, the pharmacognosy materials and our art collections are still under construction.

The herbarium can be accessed by appointment by email (srolfsmeier@bongobaystudios.com) or by phone (308 432-6385). Our normal working hours are 7:30-4:30 weekdays with exceptions for teaching, lunch and school holidays.
